Tree House Brewing buys Conn. farm for $1.6M

TreeHouse Brewing Co. in Charlton regularly has hours-long lines for its beer.

Tree House Brewing Co. is now trying its hand at farming.

The internationally ranked Charlton brewery announced Tuesday plans for the Tree House Orchard & Farm Fermentory.

In a blog post, the company said it now owns and operates 100 acres of farmland including 60 acres of agriculturally prime soil, grazing pasture for cattle, a produce and flower program, apple trees and "vast expanses of land to be cultivated and planted for many years to come."

The company will also offer a Community Supported Agriculture program.

Tree House didn't detail the location of the farm. However, a Woodstock, Conn. town clerk confirmed an entity registered to the Tree House founders -- Pride and Purpose LLC -- purchased the 93-acre Devon Point Farm property for $1.6 million this week.

A significant portion of the farm will be set aside for an orchard and fruit project including peaches, pears, plums, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and other produce to serve both the farmstand operation and the brewery's eclectic fermentation program.

In addition to a barrel room for the fermentation, conditioning and fruiting of various beverages, the brewery is planning to produce cider for fermentation and unpasteurized consumption in the fall.

The post announcing the Connecticut farm shed some light on what has been happening at the company's former production facility in Monson.

"Monson has been churning away and amassing a stockpile of barrel aged creations that will emerge sporadically as they mature from a lengthy slumber," the brewery said.

Tree House opened its 52,000-square-foot Charlton brewery in June 2017 after about two years at the Monson location.

The brewery is in the midst of a 16,000-square-foot expansion in Charlton and is pledging to reduce its carbon footprint by more than 21,000 metric tons through investments in renewable energy and wastewater treatment.
