Health agency to pay $14M for MassHealth fraud

A home health agency that operated in Worcester and other locations will pay more than $14 million to settle allegations it overcharged for services from MassHealth, the state Attorney General's office announced Tuesday.

Centrus Premier Home Care, Inc., which did business as Maxim Healthcare Services in Worcester and five other locations in the state, submitted improper claims to MassHealth for home health aide services when nursing or skilled therapy services weren't necessary, according to Attorney General Maura Healy's office.

The AG's investigation found between March 2010 and October 2016, the company submitted and received payment for almost 95,000 claims for services not covered by MassHealth.

Per the settlement, Maxim will pay $14.3 million to MassHealth and provide annual written certification to the AG's office of compliance with conditions. Employees will all be trained in the MassHealth billing process.

"Home health agencies must be diligent in their billing practices to preserve the integrity of this program, which provides critical health care services to low-income individuals across our state," Healy said in a press release.
